In the depths of Quebec’s lakes, Andréanne Godin observes sunlight captured by innumerable particles in suspended animation. Alternating between shimmering beams, iridescent glows, and the effects of reverberation, ochres emerge from a palette of oxidized mineral hues, ranging from golden brown to vermilion red. During her dives, an opaque, coloured light fills the artist’s entire field of view. How can a drawing gesture expand this panorama?
After free diving during the summer of 2025 in various marshy lakes, Andréanne Godin created colour charts to document the wide variety of chromatic ranges and saturations visible underwater. From samples of wild clay collected on the lakebeds, she produced the raw material — soft pastels — used to produce her drawings. In this exhibition marking the conclusion of her research-creation residency at Fondation Molinari, the artist deepens a dialogue between her immersive perceptual experiences and the colourful fields of Guido Molinari’s paintings.

***Andréanne Godin challenges the boundaries of drawing to capture and express her elusive feelings. She focuses on her own experiences in environments that have influenced and marked her life. In her most recent body of work, 48.312403, -78.048948, the artist turns her gaze towards a liminal space where light is submerged.
Beneath the waters of Abitibian lakes, light diffracts and is dissolved into the semi-opaque hues, mingling with organic particles suspended in the darkness of the depths. On the surface, sparkling beams, iridescent glows, and elusive reverberations appear in turn. Diluted, the sun's reflections seem to be absorbed by the darkness of the clayey, sandy, or rocky lake beds. The perspectives are marked by swirling halos and as we descend, it becomes difficult to find our bearings underwater. However, a rope tied at every metre leads the way. During her free dives, Godin finds herself alone. She experiences a sort of underwater introspection. This underwater observation echoes the moment when we close our eyes.
Andréanne Godin's approach goes beyond simple photographic documentation. During her explorations, she captures ineffable colourful palettes. Ochre hues and oxidized mineral shades emerge and move from golden browns to vermilion reds and then burgundy, till we brush against ink black. The colours wash over the artist's body. It is this optical phenomenon—this decanting between light and water—that she attempts to materialize. She submerges herself to capture what the eye cannot hold onto for long. The gesture becomes an extension of the gaze, but also of the hand. The act is also one of sampling. From her descents, she not only collects luminous impressions, but also extracts material from the lake: the clay left behind by the Ojibway glacial lake.
Here, in the context of her exhibition at Nicolas Robert Gallery, she has collected earth from the lake’s bed to transform into drawing tools—pastels—which become the vectors of a return to the surface. More than three hundred pastel sticks have been shaped by adding natural powdered pigments to the clay. The illuminated sticks are displayed in handcrafted wooden boxes, like a sampling of colours that are usually (im)perceptible. Several shades and their variations are thus made visible, piling up like layers of water. These pastels will be used for other future projects—a logical continuation of the present corpus. The installation reveals the stages of an evolving process. It exposes the production as it progresses. The tool-artworks support the act of their own creation. The manual auger used to extract the clay has been hand-built in ceramic.
The experiences that led Godin to explore colourful underwater fields are also present in the exhibition space. A huge drawing, on a human scale, shows a cascade of paper depicting a friend of the artist swimming in the Saint-Laurence River. There she is, radiant. She reveals herself delicately, swimming through meticulous successive strokes that are diffuse and sensitive. The thoughtful drawing becomes the submerged place where light re-emerges. The hand transposes it, but the marks remain imbued with murky layers and chromatic density.
Underwater, the artist exists. She refocuses on the essence of the experience—her presence and her relationship with the environment. She offers us this immersion in her work, in everything that precedes the artworks. It is like a visit to the studio in the depths of wandering thoughts. Through this immersion, the formal and material connections reveal themselves.

L’endroit où tu existes encorePrésenté à | Presented at Oboro

	Rencontres numineuses
Numinous Encounters Présenté à | Presented at |

This body of work includes fifteen drawings, whose representations invite us into a universe from which a more or less precise narrative emerges. Our senses are put to the test, as the visual and its narrative seek to become other. A mysterious presence is revealed and seems to trouble each image. The sometimes almost photographic rendering of the works, oscillating between realism and blur, leaves what is looked at with an unfathomable aspect.

Si bleu qu'est notre temps As Blue As Our Time
***The forest has never been as popular a subject it is now. A sought-after refuge of air-starved city-dwellers, it is the focus of reports lauding its existence around the world or celebrating the essence of its trees(1). This resource, caught in a cycle of exploitation and protection, now warrants being talked about in a different way. In fact, Non-Westerners who call these forests home believe that they have the capacity to think(2).
In Andréanne Godin's childhood memories, the forest becomes a psychic space that her artistic practice frequently revisits. This exhibition is the ultimate expression of this, one that is offered up for the sharing. Created specially to occupy two rooms at AXENÉO7, the installation invites visitors to a night stroll through a composite forest made of fragments gleaned by the artist-in-residence in Vermont and Finland, and in her native Abitibi. Both life and death lurk in this invented landscape whose concrete experience fades into a continuum of impressions suggested by the Prussian blue and Van Dyke brown pigments of majestic drawings. While the chromatic nuances are subtly enhanced by lighting, each step reflects an existential quest with (in)discernible landmarks.

***

I remember the surprise flooding my whole body, the sudden shift, the chilling murmur of the wind both light and heavy on my skin.

Crows cawing at my window woke me again this morning. I laid still in bed, my eyes wide open, only to see the moving shadows casted onto the drawn curtains. I swear, I could not reconcile the presence of you… neither your absence might I say. I tried to hold you up, I tried to mimic each of your movements, I tried to lay with you, on you, in you.

I tried to fix all that was broken but I am all that is left.

Through Your Eyes is an anthem to my mother. I have never stopped to be intrigued by her sight of the world. Now 33 years old, I still ask her to describe the way she sees without her glasses. A blurry and spatial world she has access to… a brush of colours with undefined edges and shifting depths as she moves around. Always keen to know so that I could understand, imagine, project myself in this space with new intriguing laws of perception.

On Our Way To The Border
It does not matter which one: physical, administrative or psychological, borders can often seem insurmountable. The road leading to the transcendence of this obstacle is scattered with moments, impressions, places and landscapes which work as landmarks, portals both keeping us prisoner of the feelings contained in a passed memory, but which also holds the power to propel us passed these times of turmoil.

For On Our Way To The Border, I allowed myself to look back at these moments which felt like corner stones of the four-year-long journey that my partner and I shared towards his Canadian permanent residency status.

Over the course of a residency at the Atelier Mondial in Basel, Switzerland, I developed an obsession for second hand stores... I became interested in sand roses for their beauty as well as the fascinating conditions of their formation. Out of the most arid evaporation processes the crystals construct intricate architectures. If Only You Had Sent Flowers references to a love that emerged from the most difficult circonstances and the paper cones in which florists usually wrap roses into.

A month after my arrival at the Atelier Mondial in Basel, Switzerland, a chemical attack took place on the town of Khan Shaykhun, Syria. The bomb and its content injured hundreds and killed 74 people.

Far away from home, but from a place of safety in my Basel studio, I started to try to make sense of what happened based on the information that I could access in the news. To Be Afraid of the Invisible is an attempt to reflect on this insidious event and on the repercussion that it had.

This experience somehow highlighted my fear of the invisible threat under which millions of people live every day. Using graphite powder to deconstruct the few images of the explosion accessible online is both a reflection on my own armful drawing materials and the fear of their insidious consequences on my health.

No amount of drawings or images will ever bring justice or consolation to this population, but each gesture has the power to revive memories while allowing us to never forget.

The pond

Everyday over the course of those two months, I would walk to the pond to enjoy a short swim. Allowing me to refresh, unwind and relax my upper body’s muscles from the hours hunching over the long and wide studio table; rubbing pigments, forcing them into the surface of the paper. Diving in, I would experience light and its absence, diffraction, perspective, distortion, as well as the growing under and above water flora of the pond. This made me start to think of water as a sort of trinity of surface, space and body.

Taking the canoe for short trips since the beginning of my stay, I would paddle to the other side of an island, which separated the waters in two large spaces. By midsummer the far side of the pond was overgrown by water lilies and became almost impracticable. As the boat was propelled on the surface of the water, hundreds of organic obstacles would contribute to stop its course as soon as I ceased paddling. As I was forcing my way through, the lily pads sank for some time and I started to see the empty space left by the wake of the canoe. These lines were similar to the marks of a pencil on the surface of a paper. Describing arcs and tracing pathways into this ephemeral canvas I soon found myself out of strength to paddle back to the shore: waiting for my energy to rejuvenate, the oval shapes slowly resurfaced to take their place back under the sun.

The Paths of Resistance was born of a recollection of experiences from the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation’s pond as well as the Lac Bayeul and of an unnamed lake sans nom both close to my hometown of Val-d’Or, Québec.
