The pond
Everyday over the course of those two months, I would walk to the pond to enjoy a short swim. Allowing me to refresh, unwind and relax my upper body’s muscles from the hours hunching over the long and wide studio table; rubbing pigments, forcing them into the surface of the paper. Diving in, I would experience light and its absence, diffraction, perspective, distortion, as well as the growing under and above water flora of the pond. This made me start to think of water as a sort of trinity of surface, space and body.
Taking the canoe for short trips since the beginning of my stay, I would paddle to the other side of an island, which separated the waters in two large spaces. By midsummer the far side of the pond was overgrown by water lilies and became almost impracticable. As the boat was propelled on the surface of the water, hundreds of organic obstacles would contribute to stop its course as soon as I ceased paddling. As I was forcing my way through, the lily pads sank for some time and I started to see the empty space left by the wake of the canoe. These lines were similar to the marks of a pencil on the surface of a paper. Describing arcs and tracing pathways into this ephemeral canvas I soon found myself out of strength to paddle back to the shore: waiting for my energy to rejuvenate, the oval shapes slowly resurfaced to take their place back under the sun.
The Paths of Resistance was born of a recollection of experiences from the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation’s pond as well as the Lac Bayeul and of an unnamed lake sans nom both close to my hometown of Val-d’Or, Québec.

L’étang
À tous les jours pendant ces deux mois, je me rendais à l’étang pour profiter d’une courte baignade. Pour m’y rafraîchir, m’y détendre et relaxer mes muscles tendus après des heures de travail, penchée sur la longue et large table du studio : frottant les pigments, les forçant contre la surface du papier. En plongeant, je ressentais la lumière et son absence, la diffraction, la perspective, la distorsion et voyais la flore croissante émergeant lentement des fonds de l’étang. Cette expérience commença à me faire penser à l’eau telle une sorte de trinité : surface, corps et spatialité.
Depuis le début de mon séjour j’avais commencé à prendre le canot pour pagayer de l’autre côté de l’île qui séparait l’étang en deux. Envahi par les nénuphars dès la mi-juillet, le côté le plus éloigné de l’étang devint presqu’entièrement impraticable. Les mille et une feuilles contribuaient à freiner l’embarcation dès que j’arrêtais de pagayer. Les nénuphars submergés par le passage du canot laissaient un espace vide derrière-moi. Ces lignes, semblables aux marques d’un crayon sur la surface du papier décrivaient des arcs et des traces dans cette toile éphémère. Vite à bout de souffle, je m’arrêtai un moment. Pendant ce temps, les feuilles de nénuphar refirent progressivement surface : reprenant leur place sous le soleil.
Les chemins de résistance est issu de souvenirs de mon expérience à l’étang de la Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, ainsi que du Lac Bayeul et d’un lac sans nom, tous les deux situés près de Vald-d’Or, Québec.
